43 Dragon boats battled wind, sun, rain and the sight and sound of planes taking off from London’s City Airport to take top honours and win one of five cups up for grabs in the sporting spectacle out on water.
The event celebrated the 20th anniversary of the establishment of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region and was supported by the Hong Kong Economic and Trade Office, London (HKETO), the territory’s official representation in the United Kingdom.
Europe’s most spectacular dragon boat festival drew a capacity crowd in spite of the weather to enjoy the racing, 2 live stages of music and entertainment, traditional Chinese lion dancing, and a South East Asian food festival, There were also martial arts displays including YouTube sensation Master Wong demonstrating how to protect yourself from a handbag snatcher using the art of wing chun.
This year’s ‘secret’ race team was Team Ramsay, who were being filmed for an episode of their forthcoming CBBC TV series.
A free, family-friendly event, London Hong Kong Dragon Boat Festival attracts up to 10,000 visitors from across the UK and overseas.
